Lispector hour of the star7/6/2023 Like most north-easterners, she is both dazzled and confused by the urban sprawl that is Rio de Janeiro, where she lives now. Macabea is nineteen years old, lives in grinding poverty, and hails from the north eastern part of Brazil. Rodrigo does eventually get around to beginning his story although, it is not his story at all, but Macabeas's. After all, what is a story, really? This issue absorbs him, and he spends a considerable part of the first chapter telling the reader about his own philosophical beliefs and motives, and what he thinks is the meaning of storytelling. M., is both mysterious and philosophical, and takes quite some time to get around to telling us the story at all. We are thankful for their contributions and encourage you to make your own. Usagi yojimbo 147/6/2023 The issue contains a well-deserved thank you to Luth from writer and artist Stan Sakai. He has colored many panels and covers of Usagi Yojimbo in the past along with issues of Groo the Wanderer. One note, this is Tom Luth's final issue of colorist as the artist is retiring. And now, once again, the rabbit ronin's travels continue. Before exiting, however, he does get to spend a little time with the son no one knows is his and his former sensei, offering some joy to a trip home that was scarred in violence and death. However, discovery of the plot by Mifune supporters does Usagi no favors as he is forced to leave his home once more. There's plenty of action in this final issue as the warriors hold off the assassination. Usagi Yojimbo #14 offers a couple of more surprise guest-appearances as Mariko arrives with the help of her son Jotaro and Usagi's old master Katsuichi. "The Return" concludes with Miyamoto Usagi and Kenichi fighting off a horde of misguided former Mifune supporters hoping to damage the honor of Lord Hikiji with an attack on the shogun’s agent. I count it as a great honour to be able to bring life to his words and hopefully to contribute in a small way to bringing greater recognition to his name and work. The Gods Are Not To Blame was first staged in Nigeria at the Festival of the Arts in 1968 and awarded first prize in the African Arts/Arts d’Afrique playwriting contest in 1969.Įbenezer Bamgboye on why he chose this play: “To me, Ola Rotimi is undoubtedly the Shakespeare of Nigeria, and perhaps even of Africa! The Gods Are Not To Blame is a prime example of his excellence and idiosyncrasies visceral, thrilling, poetic and an enshrinement of the quintessence of Nigerian culture. Inspired by Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex, The Gods Are Not To Blame follows King Odewale on a rousing journey to discover what is bringing such bad luck to the people of his kingdom, only to find that the answer lies close to home…Ĭonsidered an allegory of colonialism and a response to the Nigerian Civil War, Ola Rotimi’s play considers the roles of fate, ethnic distrust and hostility, and the legacy of colonial conquest in the fall of a flawed hero. This semi-staged reading will take place at the Almeida, as part of Six Artists in Search of a Play. THIS QUESTION ARE BASED ON OLA ROTIMI''S THE GODS ARE NOT TO BLAME In the prologue, the narrator's role to blame Options A) explains why the gods are not to blame B) narrates the life history of the hero C) reminds the principle character of thier functions D) explains to the audience the mimed action on the stage.

That bequest, as befitting a fairy-tale girl, is a castle. Her late godfather has left her a bequest. What fairy tales were left over for a plain, impoverished, twenty-six-year-old woman who’d never even been kissed?Right now, Izzy's entire existence hinges on a letter, a letter that arrived, promising her survival. Izzy is no longer a girl with stars in her eyes. And for as long as she could remember, Izzy had been waiting-with dwindling faith and increasing impatience-for that part of her life to begin.Instead of a charmed life, Izzy is now a spinster. Life-and romance, has always passed her by. And at 26, her life is as far removed from enchantment as you can imagine. No Prince Charming has ever shown up for her. Izzy is not ugly, but neither is she a beauty. The Summary: With a name like Isolde Ophelia Goodnight and a father who wrote a series of children's stories, you would expect Izzy's life to be a fairy tale. This book has left me a silly, sappy fool, and I can't say I regret it. Yes, I realize that the cursing is completely uncalled for!! Let me curse!! I need an element of foulness in order to retain the vestiges of my usual anger and bitterness. It makes me want to believe in starlit kisses, in moonlit romance. It left me with a goofy grin and eyes misted over with stupid unshed tears. and Khanh's heart grew three sizes that day.

The data tapes would feed the mainframe and spit out gobbledygook onto punch cards. I didn't fit into their mold (ouch, very punny).Īnd this confused little me was now at the mercy of relentlessly whirling data tapes at our workplace computer centre. Then you should read this novel :)Īh, those Milton Friedman eighties, replete in a very wet summer with a bumper crop of towering fungi - the grabbers, takers and brutal levellers of the Me Generation.Īnd meanwhile, my own Me was just simply lost and bemused. Have you ever wanted to get even? I mean really even. I particularly liked the scene during the wedding at the end of the book, it was highly intense and super hilarious. It covers the whole spectrum of no integrity, but how strangers can become friend if fighting for the same cause. The story is so descriptive, informative, greatly entertaining and hilarious at times. With revenge that can be described as "playful" rather than mean-spirited, the book has a light-hearted tone that will leave readers upbeat. The ultimate revenge novel! When four men lose their life savings to a wealthy Boston swindler in a stock market scam, how will they get their money back? That's the plot of this highly entertaining novel that can best be summed up as, don't get mad, get even! Their goal is to recoup exactly the $1 million they collectively lost, hence the title of the book. And what a great book it is! I have read it during my teenage years and decided to re-read again.

Antigone by sophocles7/6/2023 Thus, she was expected to comply with his orders not merely because he was a king but also because he had a superior position in the family and society as any other man. It means that since Antigone’s closest male relatives were dead and since she did not have a husband, Kreon became her guardian. Male relatives served as their guardians and usually made all legal and financial decisions for them (Rayor xxi). According to Rayor, women in Athenian society were “lifelong legal minors” without any political and financial rights (xx). It is possible to say that the courage of Antigone in her struggle to assert her beliefs resembles the bravery with which modern women strive to protect their interests and promote gender equality.īefore explaining how the theme of gender in Sophocles’ play is linked to the situation in modern society and before analyzing specific examples from the text, it is appropriate to discuss the role of females in ancient Athens. The defiance with social norms endows Sophocles’ character with feminist features. Such behavior was unconventional in ancient Athenian society in which women had limited rights and were submissive to and highly dependent on males that played superior roles in both the household and society. By doing so, the female protagonist showed that acting in accordance with own moral values and love for family is more important for her than obedience with authority.
